Do I owe taxes on my earnings?

The honest, non-advisory answer: probably yes, it depends on your country, and here is what to track from day one so filing is painless.

This page is general information, not tax advice. Rules differ per country and change often; for anything beyond the basics, talk to a tax professional in your jurisdiction.

the short version

In most countries, tokens you earn by hosting are taxable. Two moments usually matter:

  1. When you earn. Many jurisdictions treat earned tokens as income, valued at the market price at the time you receive them. Hosting earnings are conceptually closer to freelance or mining income than to a hobby gift.
  2. When you sell or swap. If the token’s price changed between earning and selling, that difference is typically a capital gain or loss on top of the income above.

Whether small-scale hosting counts as hobby income, miscellaneous income, or business income differs per country and per volume. That classification changes the rate, so it is the first thing to ask a local advisor.

what to track from day one

Future you will be grateful. Keep a simple record of:

  • Date and amount of every payout batch that lands in your wallet
  • Market price of $YOM at that moment (your block explorer link from the transaction is enough to reconstruct it)
  • Date, amount, and price of every sale or swap
  • Costs that may be deductible where you live: the NANO itself, electricity (see Power consumption), possibly part of your internet

Everything you need is on-chain and in the YOM app. The earnings dashboard shows what you earned per day, and your wallet history shows every settlement transaction with a timestamp. Export or screenshot these periodically; do not rely on reconstructing three years later.

common questions

  • “I have not cashed out to euros or dollars, so nothing is taxable, right?” In many countries, wrong: earning the tokens can already be the taxable event, even if you never sell. Verify for your jurisdiction.
  • “The amounts are tiny.” Some countries have de-minimis or hobby thresholds, some do not. Small does not automatically mean exempt.
  • “Does YOM report my earnings to my tax office?” YOM does not file taxes for you. Settlements are public on-chain, and exchanges you cash out through may have their own reporting duties under local law.

where YOM can and cannot help

We can help you read your earnings history, understand the settlement schedule, and find any transaction on-chain. We cannot tell you how your country taxes it. When in doubt: local advisor, with your export in hand.
